New rules to protect Employees' Tips and Gratuities as of June 10th, 2016
The Ministry of Labour of Ontario informed the Ontario population through a press release of a new set of rules aimed at protecting employees' tips and other gratuities that they collect.
As of June 10th, 2016, it is now illegal for any employer to take tips and gratuities from their employees. Employers will also not be able to make deductions from tips for things like spillage, breakage, losses or damage. Some exceptions apply.
These rules affect employers and employees covered by the Employment Standards Act 2000 in workplaces where tips and other gratuities are received (such as bars, restaurants, hair and nail salons, catering firms and taxis).
